00:06:04: So when An object vibrates say a vocal cord or guitar string, even just two rocks striking together.
00:06:11: It pushes against the molecules in the surrounding medium.
00:06:14: It creates chain reaction?
00:06:15: A very specific kind of chain reaction.

00:06:22: Vibrating object pushes forward and compresses air molecules in front of it.

00:07:22: We can measure the amplitude of wave, which determines volume or intensity of sound.
00:07:27: So
00:07:27: a higher pressure compression means louder sound?
00:07:30: Precisely!
00:07:31: And we can measure frequency – how many of these compression waves pass a fixed point per second.
00:07:37: And that is measured in Hertz, right?
00:07:38: Yes,
00:07:39: Hertz and Frequency determines pitch so faster vibrations mean a higher frequency, which we perceive as a higher pitch.
00:07:46: Ok…and you could also measure how fast it travels.
00:07:49: if I remember right, changes depending on the medium.
00:07:51: Considerably

00:07:52: The speed of sound in dry air at roughly room temperature is about three hundred and forty-three meters per second Okay.
00:07:58: But because sound relies on molecules bumping into each other, it travels much faster in denser mediums where the molecules are packed tightly together... Because
00:08:07: they don't have to travel as far to hit the next molecule?
00:08:09: Exactly!
00:08:10: So in water, sound travels at about one thousand four hundred and eighty meters per second.
00:08:15: Whoa that's way faster.
00:08:16: And in solid iron it travels at over five thousand meters per.
00:08:20: That is crazy fast!

00:08:24: The objective measurable reality of pressure waves moving through a medium.
00:08:30: But just the position and title brings in the subjective element because we don't walk around experiencing longitudinal pressure waves

00:09:58: Inside of the cochleas is basilar membrane which is lined with thousands of microscopic hair cells.

00:10:04: So as amplified vibrations cause fluid in the cochlear to ripple A traveling wave forms along those basilar membranes and different frequencies of sound cause different parts in the membrane to vibrate.
